Vital Ones, I learned that I was going to be a father about the same time I decided to open our flagship Vital Hemp store in Santa Monica. It was the middle of 2010, during our last recession; many stores were closing, not opening. Our cash flow was low, because I had just moved production from China to Los Angeles and was busy finding, testing and vetting our new contractors. Still, I took the long view. This wasn’t about the next year, or even the next five. This was about the next decade, the next generation, and hopefully many generations to come. Yesterday, I decided to see what the net had to say about the word “father” and came upon this site for a non-profit, National Center for Fathering: What I love about the video is the idea that we live longer than our physical lives. What and how we give lives on and forever changes the fabric of the future. What’s also clear is that everything doesn’t have to line up perfectly for us to have a tremendous, positive impact on the lives of others. As Carey Casey says, you don’t have to be a biological father to share the gift of fathering--of caring, praising, encouraging, nurturing, and protecting. At this time of year, we also celebrate Summer Solstice and soon, the 4th of July. I love this time of year—the long days, getting together with friends and family, appreciating nature. We often refer to our planet as “Mother Earth,” because it is the source of all life. Maybe it’s time we also act more like a mother and father toward our Earth. We wouldn’t ravage our children for a short-term profit, yet we allow many corporations to do this every minute. So while the days are long and we celebrate our liberation from tyranny, let’s think about the ways we can protect the future we want to see, finding new ways to organize our lives, economies, resources, food & water sources (related), energy sources, and wardrobes, with the best possible results!!!
